When I last had a formal chat with my friend who works at Hamlet at the Barbican, she mentioned one thing to me: Cumberbatch doesn’t really leave the Barbican complex during the day or between shows. She found this saddening and had an idea as to why that might be.
“He was anxious one day about not having a sandwich because no one was there to go out and get it for him. It struck me how isolated he is.” My friend then went on about how astounding that perspective was because the chances of him getting mobbed at the local Pret or another cafe was minimal because so few people are in the area: he’d get stopped by one person at best. “Before Sophie was in his life, he had no problems going out,” my source said, as we discussed how frequently he was spotted on public transport and happily posing for photos with fans. My friend went on to say that this may be because of:
1) Hunter influencing him for the worse, convincing him there is something wrong with contact with fans or that he would get mobbed when in reality he would not, and
2) Hunter and her family’s love of talking to the UK red tops, like The Mirror.
“Before Sophie was in his life,” my friend says, “we heard nothing about his personal life. Now everything comes out.”
Some examples we mentioned between the two of us were the tabloid story about him collecting toy birds and Hunter refusing to live in the same house he lived in with his ex-girlfriend.
So we’re going to look back and compile a list of things that have appeared in the tabloid press since Hunter wafted her way into Benedict Cumberbatch’s life like a bad fart, the kind of things that likely would have never reached the press had he settled down with someone else or remained single: click here to see the list.
